I was in Södertälje a little over a week ago. There was a banner of arms
flying not far from the town hall (acctually outside the fire station) but
closer to the town hall there were other flags in bright colours with the arms
upon and text "Södertälje kommun" (= Municipality of Södertälje). The arms of
the municipality is prominently displayed on the town hall, bearing a mural
coronet because Södertälje used to be a town until 1971 (since 1971, all
municipalities in Sweden are just municipalities (kommuner) without any nominal
or other formal difference).
The woman in the arms is a local saint from the Middle Ages, which has been used
in the arms and seal of Södertälje for centuries. Her name is Saint Ragnhild.
She was first used in symbols for the town in 1628. Ragnhild was married to King
Inge the Younger, hence the crown on her head, while the staff and the red cross
are here attributes as a saint.
In 1386 Tälje (as the town was known until 1622 when Norrtälje ("North Tälje")
became a town; Södertälje means "South Tälje") used an image of Saint Olof in
its seal - the Norwegian King Olav the Holy, who was highly revered in Sweden
too. After this but before 1628, the town has also used a seal with the image of
the Virgin Mary.
