Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem (Latin: Patriarchatus Latinus Hierosolymitanus) was the crusader-created new Patriarchate for the territories conquered by the Catholics on Islam in and around the Holy Land, which became a titular archbishopric after their defeat but now is the title raising the rank of the see of the Latin Church Catholic Archbishop of Jerusalem. It is exempt, i.e. directly subject to the Holy See (and exceptionally its Roman Congregation for the Oriental Churches, which normally handles Eastern Catholics), without an ecclesiastical province, hence has no Metropolitan function. The Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem also holds the office of Grand Prior of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre.

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem is a particular Catholic church whose territory includes Cyprus, Jordan, Israel and Palestine. It is supported by six Vicariates that operate in different fields of action to support the Christian communities in all of these countries. It traces its origins to 33 A.D. (as the establishment of the See of Jerusalem), then 1099 (as the establishment of the Latin patriarchate under the Holy See), later 1374 (being a titular see) and in modern times July 23, 1847 (re-establishment and current form) through apostolic letter "Nulla celebrior" and Pope Pius IX modernized the Order, issuing a new Constitution which placed it under the direct protection of the Holy See and conferred its government to the Latin Patriarch. The Order’s fundamental role was also defined: to uphold the works of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, whilst preserving the spiritual duty of propagating the Faith.

In 1949, Pius XII decreed that the Grand Master of the Order should be a Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church and assigned the position of Grand Prior to the Patriarch of Jerusalem. In 1962 Pope John XXIII and, in 1967, Pope Paul VI reorganized and revitalized the Order by adding more specific regulations to the Constitution with the intention of making the Order’s activities more coordinated and more effective.

In February 1996, the Supreme Pontiff John Paul II enhanced the Order’s status. Today it is a Public Association of faithful with a legal canonical and public personality, constituted by the Holy See under Canon Law 312, paragraph 1:1.

Over and above its historic connotations and its eventful progress in times gone by, the valuable and interesting aspects of the Order today lie in the role assigned to it, which it pursues within the sphere of the Catholic Church and through its administrative structure and its local organizations in various communities.

The flag is yellow and white (sinister hoisted) with a specific rendition of the coat of arms, and the name of the patriarchate below in Latin (Patriarchatus latinus) with the word Jerusalem in English on a second line, and the

The flag ratio is 2:3 - the second photo clearly reveals that, while in the first one, it looks more oblong only because of the way it was folded by the wind in the moment the photo was made, while watching its hoist and bottom edges also reveals that the ratio cannot be 1:2.
