Meaning:
The new arms combine elements of both former communes: belfry and olive branches from São João, base wavy and millwheel fom Ribeira.

São João da Ribeira e Ribeira de São João United Commune was formed by a merger in 2013; its communes together had 1388 inhabitants in 2011 and covered 28.0 km².
