The arms are Vert, a rabelo-ship Or with sails Argent over a base wavy Argent and Azure, in each, dexter and sinister, chief a bunch of grapes Purpure leafed Or. Mural crown with five visible towers (city rank) and white scroll with black upper case letters reading "CIDADE DO PESO DA RÉGUA".

This is a city that belongs to Vila Real district (Trás-os-Montes traditional province) has a 97 km² area, eight communes (freguesias) and about 25 000 inhabitants.

This municipality as such, like most of the other 307 current ones, was established in 1844 based on previous forms of local government severalcenturies old. What happened in 1985 was just the routine upgrade of the honorific status of the nominal seat settlement from town rank to city rank. According to Sérgio Horta Peso da Régua gained the rank of a city and became seat of a municipality on 14 August 1985.
