First mention in 1305. Established, probably, by Prince of Opole - Władysław.
In 1683, King Jan III Sobieski stopped there on the way to rescue Vienna.
In May 1921, during the III Silesian Uprising, taken for Poland by the
3rd Batallion of Jan Woźniczek.
Enjoyed the city rights:
* from 1506 to 1742
* from 1853 to 1945
* since 1996
Arms and flag adopted on February 19, 2003 (resolution # V/32/2003).
"Arms: on a silver shield an image of the fir tree with roots in the
natural colors.
Flag: yellow over blue with the Arms in the center."
