Gilgit-Baltistan is a part of the former Kingdom of Jammu and Kashmir, that
was mostly tributary areas of several lower rank states within J&K. After
independence of Pakistan and India, this territory stayed without any official
status under Pakistani military influence, known as Northern Areas. In 2009
Pakistan gave a self-governance to the territory under the name Gilgit-Baltistan.

The flag is green with the coat of arms on it, in a similar manner as the
Pakistan provincial flags. There is also a flag for the GB Assembly which photo
