De Nederlandsche Stoomboot Reederij (Netherlands Steamboat Co) was the
successor of the Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij, established in 1822. This
was the first steamboat co in the Netherlands. In 1886, when the NSM company was
in financial troubles, the NSR took over the ships and services between
Rotterdam and Mannheim. The company had several house flags during their
existence. In the 1920s the company was taken over by its German rival the Köln-Düsseldorfer
Rhein Dampfschiffarts Ges. This ended in 1945. The company was renamed than the
Nederlandsche Stoomboot Reederij Akkermans. Mr. Akkerkmans was a former manager
of the NSR. In the mid-fifties the passenger services with the magnificent
passenger vessels on the Rhine ended, beaten by strong competition of train and
road traffic.
