As every postal service the Dutch Post office has a long history. Though the
title changed several times in recent years for a long period the official name
was Staatsbedrijf der Posterijen, Telefonie en Telegrafie. As in a lot of
countries the activities were separated and privatized. Originally mail was
carried to countries all over the world by Dutch shipping lines. Each line had
its own postal service flag. An official Dutch flag for the mail service was
never implemented. The telephone department of the agency owned a vessel to
provide and maintain telephone cables. From 1948 until 1968 the cable vessel
Poolster was used for this purpose. In 1968 a new vessel was built the
'Directeur-generaal Bast'. The service had a special flag and also a funnel
mark.
