Leerdam municipality
Number of inhabitants (1 Jan 2003): 21.082; area: 35,18 km². Settlements:
Leerdam (seat), Kedichem, Oosterwijk, Schoonrewoerd.
In 1986 the municipalities of Kedichem, Leerdam and Schoonrewoerd merged
to form the new municipality of Leerdam.
On 30 Oct 1963 the municipal council adopted a flag: yellow, with two
red stripes with both on top and bottom battlements. In Sierksma's Nederlands
Vlaggenboek, 1962, [sie62] is an image
with 16 battlements (4x). This flag had been in use for some time already
for special occasions. It occurs as "flag of Leerdam" on an image, edited
by Pieter Post in 1651 of the funeral of Prince Frederik Hendrik in 1647.
Leerdam was then a county, belonging to the Orange-family.
On 25 Sep 1986 the new municipality adopted the present flag (with
the same description), but the number of battlements reduced to 5 (4x).
