At this website
is an explanation of the arms and flag of Wommels, seat of Littenseradeel.
In 1999 Jelle Terluin of the "Fryske Rie fan Heraldyk" made a design
for the village Coat of Arms. The three green "terpen" (hills built as a refuge
against the sea) with signs on top of a scoring board used for the game
of "keatsen" (don't know the English translation - 't is the game Philip
the Beautiful of Burgund played, during which he died because of excessive
sweating) <Wommels is the place where yearly the "keats-season" starts
with the "freule-partij"> above the crescent of the Sminia family. On top
of that two or noir Saint James shells (of the Hottinga family) and in
between a red rose (Jongema). The rose is the symbol of the goal of the
pilgrimage and the cresecent may symbolize the Islam (many places in Fryslân
use this symbol as "conquering Islamic forces in Lisboa and Damiette"),
which fits quite well in the St James (Santiago de Compostella) pilgrimage
symbolism. In the flag the St James shell has been rendered in red, with
a rose and a leading star. The star marks Wommels as the seat of the municipality.
