Gieten coat of arms: gules a turned greyhound rampant argent, necklaced
or; the shield surmounted by a crown or of three leaves and two pearls.
The origin of the greyhound is unknown. It was already shown in the
chamber of the Provincial States of Drenthe in 1883, and was used as emblem
by the village choir in 1937. Possibly it is connected to hunting parties
in times long gone. However Mr. van der Laars in the Koffie Hag album suggests
that the person in charge of the dressing up of the States-chamber simply
filled an empty space with a jumping greyhound...

Stefan Lambrecht mentioned a flag of Gieten, a former municipality in
Drenthe province, now part of the municipality of Aa en Hunze. On the site
of the
Gieten Firebrigade
was the doggy of the former municipal Coat of Arms in a kaleidoscopal flurry of
yellow and green. Mr. Henk Alting from Gieten confirmed that that was indeed
the
Gietener village flag. Adopted 1 Jul 2004; designer unknown; it was instigated
by the Political Party for Village Interests. (politieke partij Dorpsbelangen).
Mr.Hans van Heijningen described it: (in Dutch: vanuit een groen
gezoomde gele ring op x/y vlaghoogte en a/b vlaglengte krom gegeerd van
geel en groen; de geer in de broektop breed en beladen met een omgewende
springende witte hazewindhond.)
Out of a yellow oval bordered green near flagcenter curvy gored of
yellow and green; the gore in topcenter wide and charged with a white greyhound
rampant.

Proof, if needed, that certain categories of drugs are legal in the
Netherlands!

Some drugs cure, don't they? Anyway I've seen worse designs. But the
greyhound on red would have been a far superior cure!

Henk Alting is the webmaster of the site "Het
collectieve geheugen van Gieten" (the collective memory of Gieten).
In Dutch we have the expression: "Een geheugen als een vergiet"
- a memory like a strainer, used for forgetful persons. Henk's memory
is quite OK, though, as he just sent me two huge files with identical Gieten
village flags. I've taken some time to regif the Gieten flag from those
files - and IMO it looks better now.

We have the same saying in New-Zealandish, but translate it as sieve,
not strainer!
