Located in Matsumoto City Nagano Prefecture and established in 1949. The embroidered ceremonial flag has dark green background with a gold emblem in the center and gold fringe. The university flag has white background with a gold emblem in the center. In 1949, the then Shinshu University Welfare and Auxiliary Department solicited students and the general public for designs for the student emblem (badge), and as a result, the design proposed by a vendor was adopted. However, over the years since its adoption, several marks with different shapes were created, and on November 18, 2009, the board of directors approved the use of a unified mark that most closely resembles the original proposal. Furthermore, on March 18, 2010, it was officially adopted as the university emblem. The kanji letters “”大學“ is surrounded by leaves of Komakusa(direntra peregrina)which is so noble that it is called the queen of alpine plants and is a symbolic flower of Shinshu. At Shinshu University, it became the motif on the university's lapel in 1950 and has been familiar to many people.

jiposblig.blogspot.com shows the flag just after mid-page, esp. the first one (clickable). Caption, translated: "The official flag of Shinsu University. The symbol had only been determined on last year (I thought)…" That would have been 2006, then.

On a green field, a stylized white bird-shape flying towards the hoist above the name ‘SHINSHU UNIVERSITY’ also in white. (Flag neatly held in place with little triangular mounting elements, seen before on photos taken in Japan.)

The University homepage showing the flag states:

Shinshu University consists of eight faculties: Arts, Education, Economics, Science, Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture, and Textile Science and Technology. All of these faculties offer both undergraduate and graduate courses. More than 1,000 full-time academic staff are engaged in teaching and research, and at present approximately 11,000 students are enrolled. Almost 400 of these students are overseas students from a wide variety of different countries. The University's five campuses are located in the cities of Matsumoto, Nagano City, Ueda and Ina in the region known as Shinshu or Nagano Prefecture.

The university is a national one, founded in 1949, and that Shinshu is the former name of Nagano region.
Jan Mertens, 16 May 2007

The symbol mark flag has white background with a green symbol mark and horizontally written in black kanji and English university name. The symbol mark consists of the initial "S" of Shinshu University and a bird soaring majestically in the sky of Shinshu. The three wings symbolize "education," "research," and "social contribution," and the large, dynamic wings that unite them represent the image of flying toward the world (international society). The three shades of green, which change from light green to dark green (the school color), reflect the nature of Shinshu, which is full of vitality, and express the wish for the growth of students and the development of the university.
