Nakatsugawa was founded on 1 April 1951 by a merger of two villages, and
became a city on 1 April 1952. It has grown significantly since then. The
emblem features a stylised naka 中 (centre, inside) in the centre,
with two extra line making the emblem a circular shape. The design
symbolises the expansion like a cirlce (in all directions?) of
the city area by joingin with nearby villages, the peace of the union, and
the resulting rushing increase of the city population.

The flag of the former village of Yamaguchi (Nagano Prefecture) was green
with mark. The village is now part of the city of Nakatsugawa.

The former Yamaguchi Village became a part of Nakatsugawa City on Feb 13th
2005. It is rare case for the village located in Nagano Prefecture became a part
of a city in next Gifu Prefecture.
