The municipality of Ahvaz (1,184,788 inhabitants in 2016) is located in
south-western Iran, close to the border with Iraq.
Ahvaz is divided into
two parts by river Karun; the western and eastern parts of the town are
connected by seven bridges, which yield the nickname of "Town of the Bridges" to
Ahvaz.
The emblem of Ahvaz represents the two-arched White Bridge, the
fourth suspended metal bridge built in the world. Less than 50 years after the
construction and opening of the Brooklyn Bridge, the first metal bridge ever
built, the White Bridge was erected in Ahvaz, where the foundations of the
suspended metal bridge were erected. Among the stories related to the
construction of the bridge, they say that a German engineer, together with his
wife, who was also an engineer, began to build a bridge and worked successfully
until the stage of mounting one of the arch successfully. The tools and
equipment provided by the bridge maker, including the gantry crane with which
the first arch had been mounted, were taken back by the British oil company,
which made the German engineer to get ill and die. After some time, his widow
used several dives instead of a crane, which allowed the mounting of a second
arch on the skeleton of the bridge and the completion of the bridge. The bridge
was inaugurated on 9 November 1936.
