Reading Dave Martucci's article posted from the NY Times, it comes to my mind the flags reported on UFE14-64.
In the article, the author mentions "the black-and-green flags of Imam Hussein, the revered Shiite martyr". Now, when looking for images of this flag according to this description, one can see many flags with the portrait of Imam Hussein, arranged in different ways, but all of them featuring the face and upper body of the Imam, as seen in the following images from this article "Iraq enters new phase: The War of Flags (PHOTOS)"

Indeed, it is a Shiite religious flag as pointed out by Al Kirsch on November 15, 2014, and thus, it belongs to Islamic flags, Shiite flag of Imam Hussein.
