Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was established in 1920; it evolved out of
the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College (MAO College) which was set up in 1877 by
Sir Syed Ahmad Khan (1817-1898), one of the architects of modern India, after
Oxford and Cambridge universities. AMU is composed of 12 Faculties, 7 Colleges,
10 Schools, 19 Research Centers and more than 100 Departments.

The flag of AMU is horizontally divided green-white-red with the university's
seal, in black and white, in the center, slightly overlapping the colored
stripes.
