Jammu and Kashmir's first flag was from 1846 on wholly saffron red with a
rounded tail. Since 1936 the flag had a white plough,
probably the symbol of the essentially agricultural economy of the state. The
Maharaja had a red standard with on top and at the bottom a yellow stripe.
