Kafar Kanna is a local council since 1968 with 16'400 inh.
(2003) (88% Moslems and most of the rest Christians). It is
situated north to Nazareth, on the
main road to Tiberias (road 75).
It is known since the Roman era and it become famous when in the
Byzantine era it was identified with Kanne, in which Jesus Christ
made his first miracle by turning water into wine at a wedding.
It this site there is a church built in 1879 on the ruins of a
Crusaders era church and 4th century A.D. synagogue. The Jewish
community was probably dissolved in the 17th century.
There are two more churches: St. George (Greek-Orthodox – 1886)
which present two jugs that said to be used in the miracle, and
St. Bartholomew which stand of the said site of the home of
Natan'el of Kanne (who later become St. Bartholomew).
