Split-Dalmatia County is situated in the middle Dalmatia. Even if it is the only county that have the name of Dalmatia in it, it does not encompass the whole historical Kingdom of Dalmatia.
Željko Heimer, 20 March 2005
The symbols of Split-Dalmatia County are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Županije splitsko-dalmatinske, adopted on 12 December 1995 by the County Assembly and published in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik, No. 9.
The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company from Rijeka.
The symbols are described in the County's Graphic Charter Splitsko-dalmatinska županija - Knjiga osnovnih grafičkih standarda -

Coat of arms of Split-Dalmatia County - Image by Željko Heimer, 6 April 2013
The coat of arms is: "Azure a crown of Zvonimir or". The crown of Zvonimir is based on the representation of the crown on the head of a Croatian king found on the old Croatian engraving in a baptistery built in early Romanesque 11th century style. The baptistery is found in Split, and it is believed that the figure represents King Zvonimir-Dmitar (?-1089, ruled from 1075), who liberated Dalmatia from Venetians, and organized the capital and the seat of the Croatian Parliament in Knin. The same crown design is used on the coat of arms of the Sibenik-Knin County.
Since the County does not encompass the whole historical Kingdom of Dalmatia, there is no sense in using the historical Dalmatian coat of arms, "Azure three leopard's heads or". However, the historical connection is retained by the use of the same colours in the modern County's symbols.
The construction details of the coat of arms are provided in the county's Graphic Charter using a mesh of 10 x 12 unit squares, with the bottom horizontal edge being at the median of the bottom squares. The rounded corners have a radius of one unit, the curve making the bottom point being also one unit wide, of unspecified radius. The crown emblem, the black outline included, is 7.25 units high, the outline being 0.125 unit wide. The crown lays on an imaginary line located 3 units from the bottom point.
The shield may be used without outline, but when the outline is present it has to be of the same golden yellow shade. Not specified, the outline's width is shown on the construction sheet as being of 0.075 unit.
