The municipality of Punat (1,876 inhabitants in 2001, 1,784 in the village of Punat) is located south of the town of Krk, on the island of the same name. Punat is built around a large bay with a tiny entrance, thus providing for an excellently guarded port. On an islet in the middle of the bay is a monastery that maintained the Croatian scholarship for long years since its establishment in the 9th century.

The symbols of Punat are prescribed by Decision Odluka o izmjeni i dopuni Odluke o grbu i zastavi Općine Punat, adopted on 28 March 1996 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 17 April 1996 in the County official gazette Službene novine Primorsko-goranske županije , No. 9.
This is an Amendment to a previous Decision on the symbols; unfortunately, it seems that the amended Decision was not published in the gazette. The amendments made by this Decision are just two. First, the word "historical" is added to the description of the coat of arms, probably to attest the fact that Punat adopted its historical coat of arms. Second, the determination "the flag is bordered with a red border line" was deleted from the description. The red border was obviously removed from a former flag upon request of the State Commission of the Ministry of Administration.
The Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Punat (text), adopted on 16 January 2006 and published on 17 January 2006 in Službene novine Primorsko-goranske županije, No. 2, describe the symbols.
The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.
The flag is in proportions 1:2, light blue with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.

Coat of arms of Punat - Image by Željko Heimer, 2 August 2013
The coat of arms is "Azure Archangel Michael, armoured or, clad white and caped gules holding in his dexter an erect sword proper and in his sinister scales also or, standing on two peninsulas vert issuant from flanks and between those a sailboat argent".
The coat of arms, based on a historical seal or coat of arms, thus pictures the entrance to the Punat Bay protected by St. Michael.
