Omišalj is a municipality developed around a small coastal town in the northern part of Krk Island, with 2,700 inhabitants. The Rijeka airport on Krk, the oil and gas terminal port and a oil refinery will preserve the municipality future, but tourism is not underdeveloped either.

The symbols of Omišalj are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Omišalj, adopted on 4 May 1995 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 8 May 1995 in the County official gazette Službene novine Županije primorsko-goranske, No. 9.
The Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Omišalj, adopted on 27 September 2001 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 2 October 2001 in Službene novine Primorsko-goranske županije, No. 23, describe the symbols. The description is repeated in the current Statutes Statut Općine Omišalj, adopted on 16 July 2009 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 25 July 2009 in Službene novine Primorsko-goranske županije, No. 29.
The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.
The flag is in proportions 1:2, white with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.

The coat of arms is "Gules, a tower embattled argent issuant from a base azure and in chief a mullet or".

The table flag in use is white bordered golden, with the coat of arms on a golden cartouche and a ribbon below bearing the name of the municipality OPĆINA OMIŠALJ and an other ribbon above written Omišalj in Glagolitic characters. Krk island was an important center of the Croatian Glagolitic literacy.
