The municipality of Lanišće (Italian, Lanischie; 398 inhabitants in 2001, 94 in the village of Lanišće) is the north-westernmost municipality in the County, covering the Ćićarija highlands and therefore relatively sparsely populated (under 3 inh./sq. km). The 14 villages forming the municipality are relatively isolated and high up (mostly above 500 m above sea), with a specific culture preserving some old Croatian traditions.

The symbols of Lanišće are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Lanišće (text), adopted on 4 August 2006 by the Municipality Assembly and published in the Municipality official gazette Službeni novine Općine Lanišće.
The symbols are described in Articles 4-6 of the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Lanišće (text), adopted on 24 July 2009 by the Municipality Assembly and published in Službeni novine Općine Lanišće, No. 6.
The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka,
The flag is in proportions 1:2, light blue, with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.

Coat of arms of Lanišće - Image by Željko Heimer, 25 July 2013
The coat of arms is "Argent a gentian eradicated vert with flowers or".
The flower has been identified by Dr. Walter Starmühler, a specialist of the flora of Istria, as follows: "This plant is without doubt Gentiana lutea subsp. symphyandra, which is very common in this mountain region around Lanišće". A subspecies of the famous great yellow gentian, the plant has been protected in Croatia since 14 April 1955. It is commonly known as žuta lincura or simply lincura, which is also name of a priced alcoholic beverage with known medical properties (traditionally with the root left in a bottle of plum or grape brandy). The plant is also know as srcanik, gencijana, košutnik, lecijan, licijan, ravan and ravet.

Ceremonial flag of Lanišće (reconstructed image, no original seen) - Image by Željko Heimer, 25 July 2013
The ceremonial flag is prescribed as a light blue gonfalon with swallow-tailed end, the coat of arms in the middle and the name of the municipality above it.
Unlike most of such gonfalons, there are no ornaments mentioned
beneath the coat of arms (apparently, due to the swallow-tailed ending). The swallow-tail ending is unusual for this type of gonfalon, and I am
inclined to speculate that the flag of Grožnjan might have influenced it, although this is not the only swallow-tailed flag in the area - Brtonigla uses one as well. On may almost conclude that swallow-tailed gonfalons are typical for northern Istria, but this is concluding a bit too far as yet. In any case, the confirmation and
corrections to this reconstruction are yet required anyway.
