Presentation of Peteranec

The municipality of Peteranec (2,848 inhabitants according to the 2001 census, 1,531 in the village of Peteranec) is located 7 km north-east of Koprivnica.
In the 14th century, Peteranec was the site of an important river crossing over Drava to Hungary, but since then the river changed its course somewhat to a dozen of km to the east. In the 19th century it was an important regional centre, later it stagnated a bit; today, as a suburban area of Koprivnica, Peteranec flourishes once again.

Flag of Peteranec

The symbols of Peteranec are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Peteranec, adopted on 2 July 2009 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 16 August 2009 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 10.
The Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Peteranec, adopted on 9 July 2009 and published on 16 August 2009 in Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 10, include a description of the symbols. This is repeated in the current Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Peteranec, adopted on 27 March 2013 and published on 29 May 2013 in Službeni glasnik Koprivnicko-križevacke županije, No. 6 (text).
The symbols were approved by the Central State Office for Administration on 24 April 2009.

The new symbols were consacrated during a mass celebrated for the Municipality Day, the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, on 27 June 2010 (Glas Podravine, 2 July 2010).

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka. Drawings used to make the images shown on this page were kindly forwarded by the municipal administration.

The flag is in proportions 1:2, white with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.

Coat of arms of Peteranec

The coat of arms is "Gules in a chevron issuant from the base argent a cornucopia, in the chief dexter a key or and in sinister a sword".
The key represents St. Peter, the patron saint and namesake of the municipality, the sword recalls the military history of Peteranec, which was the seat of a company during the Military Frontier period, the command building being today the Municipality Hall, and the cornucopia stands for the richness of this agricultural region. The chevron shape must have been inspired by the County's coat of arms.

Former flag and coat of arms of Peteranec

The former coat of arms, probably not approved by the central authorities, depicts in a white shield a yellow house roofed red over a blue field with three wavy white stripes between green wreath of leaves and in the chief in front of red chess squares a yellow key. The house is the 19th century company command building in Peteranec (Glas Podravine i Prigorja, 17 February 1995 [image]; 1 November 1996 [image]; 27 December 1996 [image]).

Ceremonial flag of Peteranec

The ceremonial flag is a white gonfalon ending triangularly bordered yellow and with a golden fringe along the bottom, with the coat of arms in the middle, the name of the municipality above and below it a white scroll bearing a golden quill.
The quill is a reference to Peteranec as a strong cultural centre of the region in 19th century, with a large library, and as the birth place of the poet Fran Galović.
