The symbols of Slunj are prescribed by Decision Odluka o izmjeni odluke o grbu i zastavi grada Slunja, adopted on 25 March 1997 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 16 April 1997 in the County official gazette Županijski glasnik Karlovačke županije, No. 7, superseding the Decision prescribing the previous symbols.
Decision Odluka o uvjetima i načinu uporabe grba i zastave Grada Slunja (text), adopted on 5 April 2006 by the Town Assmemby and published on 24 April 2006 in Glasnik Karlovačcke županije, No. 13, recapitulates the previous Decisions and Regulations on the symbols. The Decision refers to the Decision of the Ministry of Administration approving the symbols, dated March 1997.
Decision Odluka o izmjeni Odluke o uvjetima i načinu uporabe grba i zastave Grada Slunja, adopted on 25 October 2010 and published on 3 November 2010 in Glasnik Karlovačcke županije, No. 39, changes some procedural issues regarding the grants of use of the symbols. Typos and inconsistencies in the text are corrected in Decision Odluka o izmjeni i dopuni Odluke o uvjetima i načinu uporabe grba i zastave Grada Slunja, adopted on 1 March 2011 and published on 17 March 2011 in Glasnik Karlovačcke županije, No. 8.

The current Town Statutes Statut Grada Slunja, adopted on 9 July 2009 and published on 10 July 2009 in Glasnik Karlovačcke županije, No. 20, repeats the description of the coat of arms and the flag, as introduced in the 2001 Statutes Statut Grada Slunja, adopted on 4 October 2001 and published on 10 October 2001 in Glasnik Karlovačcke županije, No. 28, adding the description of the ceremonial flag.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.

The flag (photo, photo) is described in Article 11 of the Decision as follows:

The flag of the Town is with proportions 1:2, blue with coat of arms of the Town, bordered yellow, in the middle.

The first symbols of Slunj are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi grada Slunja, adopted on 26 May 1995 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 14 June 1995 in Županijski glasnik Županije Karlovačke, No. 8.

The flag is described in Article 11 of the Decision as follows:

The flag is blueish-green. In the middle is the coat of arms of the Town. The ratio of the flag's length to width is 2:1.
Blueish-green (this would probably translate best to English as "cyan") is associated with the colour of the rivers and waterfalls among the green surrounding hills (see also the flag of the Town of Karlovac).

The coat of arms is described in Article 7 of the Decision as follows:

The coat of arms of the Town has a shield shape, horizontally divided into two fields. In the top field two lions are standing turned towards each other and are breaking a bread loaf into halves with their front paws. The bottom field is diagonally divided into two parts by water and in each part there is a millwheel. The backgrouind of the top field is dark blue, and the bottom field blueish-green. The symbols in the coat of arms are printed in golden colour. A copy of a separate document depicting the coat of arms is preserved in the Croatian State Archives.

Obviously, the top part of the arms is inspired by the Frankopan family arms (here set in the blue field). Slunj, known for numerous beautiful small waterfalls and the mills traditionally built on them, was then probably represented with the wavy diagonal and two millwheels. This design obviously served as inspiration for the eventually adopted and approved current one.

Amendment to the Decision Odluka o izmjeni Odluke o grbu i zastavi grada Slunja, adopted on 17 May 1996 and published on 11 June 1996 in Županijski glasnik Županije Karlovačke, No. 11, changed the colour "blueish-green" in Article 11 to "dark red", thus making the flag dark red. Everything else was retained from the previous Decision.
