Presentation of Konavle

The municipality of Konavle (8,577 inhabitants in 2011) is located some 25 km south of Dubrovnik, being the southernmost municipality of Croatia; it includes the southernmost tip of the Privlaka peninsula with its tip Oštro at the entrance to the Boka Kotorska bay. It is a rich region of fertile valleys, formerly the main source of food for the Republic of Ragusa (at time known in Italian as Canali or Valle dei Canali).
The municipality ismade of 33 odd, small villages around the valley and on the coast, including the village of Cavtat (2,143 inh.), the seat of the municipal administration. Cavtat was once a Greek colony known as Epidaurum. The inhabitants of Epidaurum settled Dubrovnik after the arrival of Slavic peoples; the two populations slowly merged together. Cavtat was subsequently known as Ragusavecchia or Civitas Vetus, since then Croatized to Cavtat.
Cavtat was the second biggest town in the Republic of Ragusa, and provided for many captains. Later it gave a number of intellectuals, among other Vlaho Bukovac, one of the most prominent Croatian painters of the 19th century; the politician Fran Supilo, and Baltazar Bogišić, known as an important legislator in the Principality of Montenegro. Cavtat is today a tourist place. The Dubrovnik Airport is located a few kilometres off Cavtat, near the village of Čilipi.
The municipality suffered much in the aggression of Serb and Montenegrine forces in 1991, followed with pillaging and burning, thus a number of villages are still being rebuilt.
