Presentation of Agrinio

The municipality of Agrinio (94,181 inhabitants in 2011, 12,467 ha) was formed in the 2011 local government reform by the merger of the former municipalities of Agrinio (59,329 inh.), Angelokastro (Αγγελόκαστρο, 2,673 inh.), Arakynthos (Αράκυνθος, 6,397 inh.), Makryneia (Μακρυνεία, 5,241 inh.), Neapoli (Νεάπολη, 5,052 inh.), Panaitoliko (Παναιτωλικό, 1,853 inh.), Parakampylia (Παρακαμπύλια, 2,757 inh.), Paravola (Παραβόλα, 4,804 inh.), Stratos (Στράτος, 6,144 inh.) and Thesthieis (Θεστιείς, 7,087 inh.).

Agrinio is the largest town and municipality in the Aetolia-Acarnania regional unit and its main economical center. The settlement dates back to ancient times: ancient Agrinion was located 3 km northeast of the present town. Agrinio is well-known for tobacco industry and the production of Agrinio olives.

Flag of Agrinio

The flag of the former municipality of Agrinio (Kokkonis website) was blue with the municipal emblem in gold/light brown and the name of the municipality.

The emblem of the former municipality of Agrinio, which was retained by the new municipality, depicts a characteristic event of the ancient Greek mythology, Hercules fighting the river-god Achelous.

I found no evidence of its use by the new municipality, but since it kept the same emblem, the flag has probably not changed.

Stratos (Aromanian: Yanica) is an Aromanian village. In classical antiquity, Stratos was the main town of Acarnania. Its situation at the northern edge of the fertile Acheloos plain made it a place of great military importance.

The modern village, formerly named Sorovigli, was renamed to Stratos in 1928.

The flag of the former municipality of Stratos (Kokkonis website) was white with the municipal emblem.
