The new authority adopted on 24 January 2017 the brand name of Grand Calais Terres et Mers but kept its administrative name of Communauté d'agglomération du Calaisis.
In November 2018, the administrative court in Lille, considering that the prefect of Pas-de-Calais had illegally considered himself bound by the deliberations of a qualified majority of the municipal councils of the municipalities concerned by the supression of the Communauté de communes du Sud-Ouest du Calaisis, the creation of the Communauté de communes du Pays d'Opale and the enlargement of the territory of the Communauté d'agglomération du Calaisis, cancelled the decrees issued on 1 December 2019, leaving time to draw the institutional consequences of these cancellations. The departemental commission about inter-municipal cooperation, meeting on 25 November 2019, approved the merger between the Communauté d'agglomération du Calaisis and the former Communauté de communes du Sud-Ouest du Calaisis.
