The municipality of Le Rheu (8,932 inhabitants in 2019; 1,889 ha) is located just west of Rennes.
Le Rheu and Moigné were mentioned as parishes in documents dating from 1240 and 1279, and established as municipalities in 1790. Moigné was incorporated to Le Rheu on 1 March 1965.
In the 1950s, Mayor Jean Châtel (in office, 1953-1971) transformed Le Rheu, then an essentially rural area, tp a small town, required by the industrialization of the sector, especailly the establiushment of a car factory by Citroën in Rennes. The first town planning operation was initiated in 1955 in the Landes d'Apigné; 110 pavilions were built along the national road. Not really satisfied by the experience, the mayor hired in 1959 Gaston Bardet, director of studies at the International and Higher Institute of Applied Town Planning in Brussels. For the next 10 years, Bardet applied the concept of garden city to Le Rheu, aimed at reconciling development of social connections, smart development of traffic axes, and the establishment of a green environment. Three housing estates were built: Eastern, Birds, and Sports, with street names linked to these themes. In the early 1970s, after Bardet's departure, the municipality established the district of La Motte, a housing estate in opposition to the Bardet's principles, an operation which was not be repeated. In 1971, the first collective dwellings appeared in the town. In 1976, the town created the district of Bouvetière where collective housing and suburban housing mix, then the district of Clos-Joury.
