The municipality of Saint-Émilion (1,866 inhabitants in 2018; 2,702 ha) is located 35 km north-east of Bordeaux.

Saint-Émilion, registered on UNESCO World Heritage List, has Romanesque churches and ruins stretching all along steep and narrow streets.
Saint-Émilion is one of the principal areas of Bordeaux red wine production, along with Médoc, Graves and Pomerol. As in Pomerol and the other domains on the right bank of the Gironde, the primary grape varieties used are Merlot and Cabernet Franc, relatively small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon being also used by some domains.
The Romans planted vineyards in the area as early as the 2nd century. Saint-Émilion, previously called Ascumbas, was renamed after monk Émilion (d.767), a travelling confessor, who settled in a hermitage carved into the rock. The monks who followed him started up the commercial wine production in the area.
