The municipality of Sacquenville (1,195 inhabitants in 2015, 997 ha) is
located 10 km north-west of Évreux.
Sacquenville was the cradle of a powerful feudal lineage, known since
Robert de Sacquenville, who died at the end of the 12th century. Six
generations later, his direct descendant was Pierre II de Sacquenville
(1305-1364), Field Marshal of the King of Navarre Charles II the Bad
(1349-1387). Captured at the battle of Cocherel on 13 May 1364, he was
accused by King of France Charles V the Wise (1354-1380) of betrayal and
lese majesty and sentenced to death. Beheaded and then quartered, he had
his head exposed on a pole in the "common theater" of Rouen. The king clearly showed the nobility than those taking the Navarre party would be
considered as betrayers and could not expect to save their life by
paying a ransom.
