The department is named after the Alps mountains and the
traditional province of Provence. Formerly known as
Basses-Alpes (Lower Alpes), the department was renamed to
Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (Alps of Upper-Provence) on 13 April 1970.
The canton of Sault was detached from the department to be incorporated into the newly formed department of Vaucluse in 1793; the canton of Barcillonnette was transferred to the department of Hautes-Alpes in 1811.

The flag in use by the Departmental Council of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence (photo, photo) is white with the logo adopted in 2015.
Sober, legible and modern, the logo of the departmental institution
asserts its dynamic and its values while turning to a strong territorial
anchorage.
Strong. "Alpes" and "Provence" are highlighted as the asserted markers of the
territory's identity.
Federative. A supportive link unites the two components that characterize the
department.
Modern. The graphic design based on a personalized typography plays around with
contrasts.
Recognizable. Its sober and efficient design conveys it an excellent legibility
whatever the target support.
