Symbols of Villalube

The flag and arms of Villalube are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 27 December 1995 by the Municipal Council, signed on the same day by the Mayor, and published on 31 January 1996 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 22 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Quadrangular panel, of proportions 1:1, blue with a checky stripe of two orders, white and red. In the middle is placed the municipal coat of arms in full colours.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Gules two wolves [lobos] or per pale, 2. Azure a bend checky of two orders argent and gules surrounded in chief by two fleurs-de-lis or and in base by a fleur-de-lis of the same. The shield surmounted by a Royal Spanish crown.

The Royal Academy of History found the proposed design of the coat of arms "perfectly acceptable and compliant with the Spanish traditional rules". The wolves make the arms canting, referring to the written form "Villa Lupus" (late 12th century). The second quarter of the shield is made of the arms of the Order of St. Bernard*, recalling that the powerful monastery of Moreruela once owned most of Villalube.
The Academy rejected the proposed flag, whose panel includes only a part of the municipal arms (Buletín de la Real Academia de la Historia, 1997, 194, 3:591).

*St. Bernard de Clairvaux (1090-1153), the spiritual leader of the Cistercian order, was "assigned" arms in the 15th century, "Azure / Sable a bend checky of two orders argent and gules".
