The municipality of Villanueva de Bogas (729 inhabitants in 2018; 5,700 ha) is located 50 km south-east of Toledo and 30 km south-west of Orgaz.
Villanueva de Bogas was known until the 15th century as Bogas. The name of the town might have been derived either from muga, "a post", or buda / boga, "bulrush", a plant commonly found near river Algodor.
Villanueva de Bogas was granted the status of villa in 1590 by Philip II, separating from La Guardia.
