The municipality of Alcolea del Río (3,370 inhabitants in 2008; 5,002 ha; municipal website), is located 50 km north-east of Seville.
An old Roman settlement, Alcolea was known in the Moorish times as Al- Koliah, "The Small Fortress"; the fortress was used by King Ferdinand III the Saint as an outpost during the reconquest of Seville. Once reconquered, the village was transferred to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem.

The flag and arms of Alcolea del Río, adopted on 29 March 2006 by the Municipal Council and submitted on 20 April 2006 to the Directorate General of the Local Administration, are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 10 May 2006 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 22 May 2006 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 96, p. 52 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:
Flag: Rectangular flag, in proportions 2:3, vertically divided 1:2, the stripe close to the hoist, red and covering 1/3 of the panel, the other stripe, white and covering 2/3, with the municipal coat of arms in the middle of the white stripe.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Gules a tower or with three turrets masoned sable port and windows gules flanked by a Maltese Cross argent per fess, 2. Azure a fish argent swimming sinister in chief fesses wavy of the same. The shield surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown closed.
The castle recalls the name of the town in the Roman times, Municipium Flavium Canama, canama meaning "a castle", "a fortress". The Maltese Cross recalls the Order of St. John. The fish highlights the link between the town and the river (río).
