The municipality of Santa Marta de Tormes (14,756 inhabitants in 2010;
1,001 ha) is located in the northeast of the Province of Salamanca,
bordering Salamanca in the south-east.
The population of Santa Marta de Tormes dramatically increased from
144 inhabitants in 1900 to 575 in 1950, 1,626 in 1970, 10,546 in 2000
and 14,756 in 2010, making of the town a main dormitory suburb of
Salamanca and the second most populous municipality in the province.

The flag and arms of Santa Marta de Tormes are prescribed by a Decree
adopted on 24 July 1992 by the Salamanca Provincial Government, signed on 20 December 1993
by the President of the Government, and published
on 11 January 1994 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 6 (text).
The symbols are described
as follows:
Flag: Rectangular, yellow with a blue saltire charged with a white saltire. As the finial, a Royal Spanish crown or a sphere. The municipal coat of arms may be added to the flag.
Coat of arms: Azure (blue) an aspergillum argent over it two keys or per saltire, in base waves argent and azure (blue). [The shield] surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown.
The Royal Academy of History validated the proposed symbols "without
inconvenience".
