Presentation of Andratx

The municipality of Andratx (Spanish, Andrach; 10,930 inhabitants in 2017, 8,146 ha; municipal website), located 30 km west of Palma de Mallorca, is the southwesternmost municipality of Majorca. The municipality is made of the settlements of Andratx (7,600 inh.), Port d'Andratx (3,300 inh.), Sa Coma, S'Arracó (1,000 inh.), San Telmo (400 inh.) and Camp de Mar (280 inh.). The Sa Dragonera islet, located 10 km off San Telmo, once to be transformed into a posh marina, was acquired in 1987 by the Majorca Insular Council and registered on 26 January 1995 as a Nature Park.
Andratx is of disputed - Celtic, Latin and Arab - etymology; the most popular explanation of the village's name refers to the Latin word antra, "a cave". After the conquest of Majorca in 1229 by James I, Andratx was transfered to Berengue de Palou, Bishop of Barcelona. The parish of Santa María de Andratx was established in 1248.

Andratx is the birth place of the Catalan writer Baltasar Porcel (1937-2009). In his first novel (Solnegro, 1961), Porcel highlighted the two opposed aspects of Andratx - rural and maritime. Porcel created in his further works the "myth of Andratx", presented as a place so isolated that its inhabitants, forced to exile to enter history, could leave it only by sea. This is a straightforward reference to the emigration of several villagers to Cuba in the early 20th century; Julià Guillamón reports that some 700 sponge fishers originating from Andratx once lived on the Cuban coast.
Baltasar Porcel, in spite of his anarchist roots, was a fierce supporter of Jordi Pujol (b. 1930), President of the Catalonian Government from 1980 to 2003. He was also a close friend of the singer Maria del Mar Bonet (b. 1947).

Flag of Andratx

The flag of Andratx (photo, photo), as seen in May 2009 at the Town Hall and the fishermen cooperative, is a banner of the municipal arms, showing on a blue background a yellow sun with a human face and 16 curvy, alternating big and small rays.
The sun on the coat of arms of Andratx recalls that the village is the last one in Majorca to lit by the sun in the evening, due to its geographical location.

The arms were deemed "most simple and, consequently, beautiful and in total compliance with the good heraldic style" by the Royal Academy of History, which rejected their proposed "modification", which included the addition of outer ornament lacking any heraldic meaning [and has been used, tough, my the municipality since then].

Club de Vela Port d'Andratx (CVPA, website) was established in 1968 in one of the "best and most spectacular natural harbors in the Mediterranean Sea", once used as a shelter by local fishers.
The flag of CVPA, as seen in May 2009, is blue with a life belt, white with red bands and shifted to the hoist. The life belt is superimposed with a black upright anchor, which is superimposed with a white seagull. The burgee of CVPA is a triangular version of the club's flag.
