The municipality of La Hiruela (55 inhabitants in 2014; 1,718 ha; municipal website) is located in the north-east of the Community of Madrid, on the border with Castilla-La Mancha (Province of Guadalajara), 100 km of Madrid.
La Hiruela might have been named for the word hiruela, meaning "a
path, a trail", referring either to the Cordel de Montejo and the
Cañada Real, or to the network of channels used for irrigation. The
village was probably established in the 11th-12th century after the
Christian reconquest.
La Hiruela was part of the Community of the Town of Buitrago, ruled from 1358 onwards by the Mendoza. In April 1490, La Hiruela was granted the status of villa by the Duke of the Infantado. The rights of use of the land and pastures, the rights of use of water of irrigation, and, most of all, the control of cattle were regulated by Ordinances released in 1554.
