The municipality of Ajalvir (4,339 inhabitants in 2014; 1,962 ha; municipal website) is located in the east of the Community of Madrid, 30 km of Madrid and 15 km of Alcalá de Henares.
Ajalvir was established between the 8th and the 10th centuries,
probably by colonists coming from the neighbouring town of Alcalá de
Henares. Around 1130, King Alfonso VI granted Alcalá, its castle and
dependencies, Ajalvir included, to Raimundo, Archbishop of Toledo.
Philip II sold Ajalvir in 1578 to Baltasar Cataño, a Genoese banker at
the Court. However, the inhabitants of Ajalvir offered 295,467
maravedís to remain part of the Royal domain; accordingly, the title
of villa was granted to Axalwir on 24 December 1579. Philip II's
charter was confirmed in 1719 by Philip V and in 1812 by Ferdinand VII.

The flag and arms of Ajalvir are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 21
October 1999 by the Government of the Community of Madrid and
published on 25 January 2000 in the official gazette of the Community
of Madrid, No. 20, p. 14 (text), and on 3 March 2000 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 54, pp. 9,118-9,119 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:
Flag: In proportions 2:3. Vertically divided green and yellow. In the center is placed the municipal coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Argent an image of the Immaculate Conception, 2. Azure a garb of wheat spikes or. The shield surmounted by a Royal Spanish crown.
The Royal Academy of History validated the proposed symbols, "without
any objection".
[Boletín de la Real Academia de la Historia, 2001, 198: 3, 568-569].
The most important religious festival in Ajalvir is the procession
organized on the Day of the Immaculate Conception, the patron saint of
the main church of the town (18th century).
Oddly enough, the flag hoisted on the Town Hall (photos) has the first half blue instead of green as prescribed.
