The municipality of Villamoratiel de las Matas (166 inhabitants in 2009; 3,723 ha; municipal website) is located in the southeast of León Province, 35 km of León. The municipality is made of the two villages of Villamoratiel de las Matas and Grajalejo de las Matas.
The municipality is named after a Mauratellus / Muratelli, who was commissioned in the 10th century by King Ordoño II to resettle the area. The name Villa Moratelle appeared at the end of the century. Incorporated into the municipality of Santa Cristina in 1833, the two villages were detached in 1852 to form the municipality of Villmoratiel de las Matas.
