The municipality of La Cierva (45 inhabitants in 2014, 7,148 ha; unofficial website) is located 50 km north-east of Cuenca.
La Cierva emerged as a significant settlement at the end of the 16th century. During the flourishing reign of King Philip IV, the urban development of Madrid, Toledo and Cuenca required a lot of building stuff. Quarries of marble and jasper discovered in the place known as Las Canteras (The Quarries) attracted several families to the village. Exploited until the end of the 18th century, the quarries of La Cierva were famous all over Spain. Iron mines were established around 1725 in the places known as Las Menas and Mayanas; the mines, however, were soon abandoned because of their low productivity and low content in ore.
