Presentation of Atalaya del Cañavate

The municipality of Atalaya del Cañavate (95 inhabitants in 2018; 4,660 ha; municipal website) is located 100 km south of Cuenca.
Atalaya del Cañavate emerged around a watch tower (atalaya). "del Cañavate", used for the sake of differentiation from other villages called Atalaya, may refer either to a castle located in Cañavate or to the incorporation of the place to Cañavate, ordered on 22 June 1478 by the Catholic Monarchs.
Atalaya del Cañavate was granted the status of villa in 1637, upon request of Juan Pacheco, Marquis of Villena.
