The municipality of Santa Cruz de los Cáñamos (546 inhabitants in 2015; 1,772 ha) is located 120 km south-east of Ciudad Real and 80 km south of Tomelloso.
Santa Cruz de los Cáñamos was first documented in Philip II's Relaciones Topográficas (1575), as Santa Cruz de Montiel, a village depending on Montiel. The village adopted its modern name (for the main crop of the time, hemp, cáñamo) in the middle of the 18th century, when granted the status of villa.
