Flag of Zarza de Montánchez

The flag and arms of Zarza de Montánchez, adopted on 15 April and 6 November 1992 by the Municipal Council and validated on 20 October and 24 November 1992 by the Assessing Council of Honors and Distinctions of the Government of Extremadura, are prescribed by an Order issued on 25 November 1992 by the Government of Extremadura and published on 15 December 1992 in the official gazette of Extremadura, No. 97, p. 2,730 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3. Composed of two vertical stripes, in respective proportions 1:3 and 2:3, green at hoist and white at fly. Charged in the fly with the municipal coat of arms in full colors.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1a. Vert a bramble [zarza] or, 1b. Argent a Cross of Saint James gules, 2. Or a holly oak vert fructed or. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The first quarter makes the arms canting, while the second quarter represents the former rulers of the town.
The lower quarter features Zarza's pride, the Terrona holly oak. Proclaimed a "Singular Tree of Extremadura" in 2001, the tree is c. 800 years old, therefore Spain's oldest holly oak in Spain and, possibly, world's. Daniel Patón, Professor of Ecology at the University of Extremadura, believes that the tree is indeed more than 1,100 years old.
The tree is 16.4 m in height, 27 m in canopy diameter, and 7.70 m in trunk circumference. Its trunk provides shelter for oves, rabbits and wild boars.
