Liceo Matovelle is located in Quito near the Basilica of the National Vow, a
church imagined by Father Julio Matovelle in 1883. The construction of the
sanctuary began in 1887; technically "unfinished", the basilica was blessed on
30 January 1985 by Pope John Paul II and inaugurated on 12 July 1988.
The
lawyer, poet and politician Julio Matovelle (1852-1929) was ordained priest in
1880; member of the Constituent Assembly in 1883 after the fall of the dictator
Veintemilla, he convinced Luis Cordero to erect the Basilica of the National Vow
as a tribute to the victory. He founded the Congregation of the Oblates of the
Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (Congregatio Sacerdotum ss. cc. Jesu et Marie
Oblatorum) in 1884, which manages Liceo Matovelle.

The flag of Liceo Matovelle is horizontally divided orange-white-blue.
Orange is the color of communication and of all kinds of expression,
highlighting human touch, mind safety and power of speech. Orange means that
everything is made possible by force and dedication.
White denotes commitment
to truth, expressed in vivid honesty, peace, hope, spirituality and light in
mind and heart of the educational community. White reflects the force of God
uniting the willingness of the man and the woman, generating virtue as a fruit.
Blue recalls that the two wings that allow humanity to fly are faith and reason,
faith gaining knowledge of God and reason introducing into the depths of
science. Blue is the expression of commitment and devotion to study.
The flag
highlights the three pillars of the institute: Science, Virtue and Education.
