Falko Schmidt, 26 December 2003
The canton was formed on 18 November 1801.
The flag and arms of Ambato are prescribed by the Municipal
Decree adopted on 26 January 2004. A facsimile of the Decree is
shown on the municipal
website:
"Decree on the civic symbols of Ambato
For the sake of historic and territorial unity, the civic symbols
of the Canton of Ambato shall be the same as those once used by
the Canton of Ambato and subsequently adopted by the Province of
Tungurahua. That is, the hymn to Tungurahua, words by Rodrigo
Pachano Lalama and music by Pedro Inga Vélez; the flag, made of
three horizontal stripes red, green and red, the lower stripe
being charged with the black writing "I. MUNICIPIO DE
AMBATO", and the coat of arms modified after Juan José
Boniche y Luna, whose description is the following: an ellipse
formed by a chain, whose area is divided into three quarters, in
the first, upper quarter, Tungurahua in eruption, in the second
quarter a river with three emerging stones, representing the ford
of Topo, and in the third quarter, a cinnamon flanked by two
cornucopiae filled with trpoical fruits and flowers surmonting a
key symbolizing the gate to a wonderful region.
The shield shall be placed in the middle of the flag, vertically,
its height being greater than half of the flag height [?]. It
shall be printed on all documents used by the Municipality of
Ambato. [...]
The flag shall be hoisted over all the public buildings, together
with the national flag, and shall be exhibited in all private
houses on the civic, national, provincial or local days."
Above we show a similar flag, but with a completely different
coat of arms and the writing in white, as the "new flag of
the canton", dated 26 December 2003. The source is also the
municipal website but I have not been able to find again the
image.
It must be an earlier proposal or an erroneous rendition of the
flag.
The Bolivar College does not always comply with the Decree. On
the photograph available on the municipal
website, it flies only the national flag, the other pole
being flagless.
