Translated from <www.gobernacionguayas.gov.ec>
(defunct):
"The flag is made of two stripes. One third is of green
colour, symbol of hope and aspiration to better days for the
canton. The upper part of this stripe is charged with a
five-pointed star representing the famous universal figure of our
countryfellow Blessed Narcisa de Jesús Martillo Morán. The two
other thirds of hite colour, representing the purity and honour
of the inhabitants. This stripe is charged with a green ray, with
an inner white ray, symbolizing the spiritual courage of Narcisa
enlightening our farms and fields."
Blessed Narcisa de Jesús Martillo Morán (1832-1869) helped the
poor and healed the ill, and also had prophety skills. In 1955,
her body was brought back from Lima to Guayaquil and found
uncorrupted. Narcisa was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1992.
