The parish of Ludo (3,366 inhabitants in 2010) is part of Sigsig canton
(Azuay province).
Ludo was settled in the early 18th century by Sebastián Jiménez, his wife
Manuela Chacón, and their five sons. The settler was nicknamed "El ludeño", as a
bastardized reference to its Spanish town of origin, Lugo - the correct nickname
should have been "El lugeño". This etymology of the name of Ludo agrees with
research made by Luis Cordero Crespo, who could not find any satisfactory
etymology related to local languages. There is little additional information on
Ludo in the colonial period, except a document dated 23 August 1723 presenting
Ludo as a dependency of San Bartolomé. Ludo must have been at the time a very
small settlement. During the independentist period, Ludo appears as a dependency
of Jima, still of minor significance.
The parish of Ludo was established on 10 April 1863, as part of Cuenca canton.
On 16 April 1864, a Decree of the National Congree transferred the parish of
Ludo to Gualaquiza canton. Incorporated in 1869 to the Gualaceo canton, Ludo was
re-incorporated to Gualaquiza on 24 January 1883. On 13 September 1939, Ludo was
transferred to newly established Sigsig canton.

The symbols of Ludo are prescribed by a Resolution adopted on 19 February
2013 by the Parish Council. The Resolution acknowledges the adoption the
proposed flag and arms by Parish Act No. 19 of 5 October 2012.
The flag is described in Article 1 as horizontally divided green-yellow with a
white triangle placed along the hoist. Green represents the local landscape and
hope. Yellow represents the resources in gold of river Bolo, once exploited in
family workshops. White represents honesty, sincerity and open-mindedness to
scientific knowledge.
