San José de las Matas is a municipality (municipio) of the Santiago province in the Dominican Republic. As of the 2002 census the municipality had a total population of 44,475 inhabitants, 9,901 living in its urban settlements and 34,574 in its rural districts.

I understand on this page that the flag is a project from people who wish San José de las Matas could be elevated to the provincial level. I may be wrong, but I think it is only a proposal.

Are we sure that those "pretty" photoshop halo effects are part of the flag design? I'd put my money on "no," hoping I would't be throwing it away.
