After the Banner of German Athletics Union (model 1880) had disappeared in 1948, a new main banner was needed for the reestablished German Athletics Federation (Deutscher Turner Bund /DTB). The new banner was introduced on German Athletics' Festival of 1953 in Hamburg and also consecrated thereat.
The banner was a revival of current German national colours black - red - gold, which had been considered to be the colours of German Athletics' movement since the very beginning (and due to denazification also a replacement of black - white -red).
Description of obverse:
On a black sheet there was an eagle standing on top ofa golden athletics' cross, adorned by various meander patterns. The eagle was facing the dexter side. He was dissymmetric and his predominant colours were red, various shades of gold, and a little bit of white and black. It seems, as if he is composed of red and golden pieces of wire.
Description of reverse:
On a red sheet there was an inscription in black and gold initials with golden adornments ""DEUTSCHER"" (1st line), "TURNER-" (2nd line) and "BUND" (3rd line). Beneath the inscription was a branch of oak consisting of two black and golden leaves and the same number of acorns.
