The organisation was established in 1958 as Deutscher Segelsport-Verband (DSSV) and renamed on 1 January 1960, in order to avoid mismatches with the (West-) German DSV and was united with the DSV in 1991.

It was a celestial blue cotised disc charged with two white swelled sails and a red inscription beneath "DBS DDR".

The flag was white with celestial blue horizontal stripes at top and bottom, the white field was parted by a throughou celestial blue lozenge, charged with a sinister facing flying white seagull.
